| The work of fashion designer Tom Ford suggests that style can govern memories without simple appeal to nostalgia. His first film, both historical and bracingly contemporary, conveys this with alarmingly precise attention to period. The setting is Southern California and our moment in time is officially the early 60s. George (Colin Firth), a gay college professor, learns that his lover has died in a car wreck. Grief overwhelms him, and suicide beckons. A mad night with his best girlfriend and the unexpected attentions of an ambiguous young man make George think twice... |
